Better Translate

Better Translate is a translation app built for real conversation and travel. Hold your half of the screen and talk; the other half is upside down, so the person across from you can read it. Photograph a menu and it comes back in your language, with the original beside it.

The questions below are the ones that come up most. The full FAQ collects twenty answers in one place, including what leaves the phone, the price and trial, refunds, and what the app must not be trusted with.

Common questions

Nothing happens when I hold my half.
Only one half can use the microphone at a time. If the other half is lit, it has it. Let go there first.
I am not being charged what the app said.
Prices come from the App Store in your own currency and can differ between countries. If you bought Lifetime, nothing renews and there is nothing to be charged for again.
I paid, but the app is asking me to subscribe.
Tap Restore purchases on the subscribe screen. It asks the App Store what this Apple Account holds. Make sure you are signed in with the account that bought it.
I bought Lifetime. Do I need to cancel anything?
No. Lifetime is a one-time purchase, so nothing renews. It is tied to your Apple Account, so Restore purchases brings it back on a new phone.
How do I cancel?
In the iOS Settings app, under your name, then Subscriptions. Cancel at least a day before the next renewal. Cancelling leaves the app working until the period you paid for runs out.
Does it work offline?
No. Translation needs a connection. Transcription happens on the phone, but the translation itself does not.
What happens to what I say?
The audio never leaves your phone; only the transcribed text is sent, to be translated. See the privacy policy.
